Blog Post #1

Both Krissy Venosdale and Sugata Mitra have different ideas on education. I found Krissy Venosdale’s post If I Built a School to be a fascinating experience for students for all grades. I respect Krissy’s response to allow the students to learn at their own pace and not to conform to test that the states require. Giving the students a place to let their imaginations run wild, in a tree house in the library and little nooks throughout the school to which the students can grow intellectually. Both Krissy Venosdale and Sugata Mitra have ideas about of allowing students to explore different topics on their own. Whereas Krissy is envisioning a perfect school, Sugata Mitra encompasses technology by giving “hole in the wall” which is computers to underprivileged countries. The students in these countries spoke very little English and have no experience with computers. However, after these children were given an opportunity to experiment with computers by a means of sharing information. With this opportunity came the ability to learn how to use a computer. When the children were asked to research on a topic, they were able to conduct their research on the topic given at hand. With the experimentation, perseverance, and cooperative learning, they were able to become successful in mastering computers as well as concepts and theories.

What do you want your students to know?
I would like for my students to have an understanding that we are all different, from the color of or skin, to hair, to eyes, and the height. There are areas that you will excel and areas that will be your weakness. As long as we help one another we can only better ourselves. The analogy I like to use is that we as people are like a coloring crayon box. When you open it, no crayon is the same, but when we work together we can color a masterpiece.

What do you want your students to be able to do?
I would like for my studenst to have a love for school and learning. I want to be able to give my students a classroom full of tools and resources that they can use. The students will still be my responsibility to teach the State Curriculum, however: I hope to teach them different techniques and skills to inspire a lifetime of learning.

What role will students play in your classroom, i.e. how will they participate in the learning process?
In my classroom, my students role will be students and teachers. It is very important to allow my class to work together in class projects and in small group learning activates. By working as a team or group and discussing among each other allows for greater learning. Their participation is required in learning in this process so that everyone can benefit from one another.

What tools will you use in your classroom?
The tools that I hope to have access to, I want to incorporate for different learning styles. With different learners, in a classroom tools will be important. Technology, books, and each other would be the tools I would want in my classroom. It covers all levels of learning which will allow for greater learning.

  1. Tarcela,

I admire what you said in your answer about wanting your student's to know! I am a firm believer in showing each student I have those exact things. The way things go in this age, most children probably don't know their value because they are not taught or told these things at home. I love your ideas and answers. Good Luck this semester!

  2. " The students in these countries speak very little English and use of computers, are given a random topic to which they clearly no comprehension on and through determination, and succeed mastering the computer and a generalized topic in a few short months." Did you proofread this sentence? Surely not or it would not read like this!

Here is my rewrite of what I think you intended. You should really be doing this yourself!

The students in these countries speak very little English and have no experience in using computers. They have access to a computer in a hole in the wall. By experimenting and as a result of sharing information they learn to use the computers. When provided with a question or questions to address, they conduct their research and learn to address the issues that have been raised. Through experimentation, perseverance and cooperative learning they are able to be successful in mastering not only the use of computers but difficult concepts and theories as well.

"...to have a rich excitement of school and learning...." Rich excitement? Think again about what you mean.

"In my classroom my student’s role will be students and teachers. ' I do not understand.

"...together in class projects..." on, not in

By working as a team/group and discussing among each other allows for greater learning. Their participation is required in learning in this process so that everyone can benefit from one another." Both of these sentences are awkward and need to be rewritten.

"The tools that I hope to have access to, I want to incorporate..." The comma should be removed.

"Technology, books, and each other would be the tools ..." "Each other" is a tool? Really!

Either you need to improve your writing or your proofreading or both. I expect it is the latter.
